Mei Hua

Oil Painting on Canvas

This portrait is a self reflection of my cultural identity and a critic  on western stereotypes. The background is a jaded green, a symbol of the Elite in Chinese culture and the rich treasures of morals and values. The color also has an association to the jade jewelry people traditionally wear which is a symbol for family and unity. The flowers are Mei Hua which is a national chinese flower that blooms in late winter and stays until early spring, signifying the welcoming of the new year. In this self portrait, I am wearing a white dress that my mother designed. It is associated with white wedding dresses of the western culture which as a Chinese girl makes me feel lost and confused/isolated in an unfamiliar place with a different culture such as the UK.
